Occupation: Student (Bioscience)
Pick one of the following topics, and tell us something about it - Ancient Egypt, Famous Pianists, Nuclear Physics:
Nuclear Physics.
One application of nuclear physics is the radiocarbondating. With this method you can estimate the age of a subject, e.g. a fossil up to 60.000 years.
There are two other Carbon Isotops, both natural and nonradioaktiv Isotops: C-12 and C-13. C-14 is created in the atmosphere. While Photosynthesis Plants use all of the Isotops to create sugar, which creatures consume on one way or another(carnivore or herbivore).
After an organism died (either plant or creature) it stops gathering Carbon. With a radioactive half-life of 5700 years the atoms decay.
So you can calculate the age of a fossil based on the percentage of C-14 Isotop.
Hope I didn't forget something.
Greetings RaG
